The subject matter of this riveting documentary—the indoctrination of adolescent children into the “army of God” at an Evangelical Christian summer camp(ironically located at Devil’s Lake in North Dakota)—seems certain to spark controversy.
And it probably would be controversial if this film by co-directors Becky Fischer and Mike Papantonio were not completely impartial, simply showing the audience what goes on in the “Kids on Fire” camp, where teenagers and preadolescents are taught to pray, reject sin, and embrace Christ. Their responses will be disturbing to some, uplifting to others; this is no hatchet job, though the image of little children weeping ecstatically and speaking in tongues almost demands critical comment. There are no easy answers, but the power of Jesus Camp is that what we see is enough: there will be no indifferent reactions, and as a presentation on an often-neglected (but ever-growing and ever-more politically powerful) segment of the American population, this film is absolutely riveting. There will be a discussion at the Art Center at 4 pm Sunday, December 10th. The panel will include Fr Frank Coady and Brance and Shawn Crawford. The Crawfords will share their experiences of growing up in the Evangelical tradition and discuss why one remained in that tradition,one chose another path, and how they find common ground.
